About the Species

Native to South America, Corydoras paleatus is one of the most durable and adaptable Cory species in the hobby. They are naturally found in cooler, well-oxygenated waters and are known for their ability to thrive in a wide range of aquarium setups.

Their peaceful nature and constant movement make them a staple in community aquariums.

Color, Size & Presence

Peppered Corydoras display a unique mix of gray, silver, and black speckling across their bodies.

• Adult Size: 2.5–3 inches
• Body Type: Rounded, armored catfish
• Coloration: Mottled “peppered” pattern
• Visual Impact: Natural, varied, and highly active in groups

👉 Each fish is slightly different, creating a more natural, wild-style look when kept in schools.

Fin Variation (Important Note)

Peppered Corydoras can display variation in dorsal fin height, especially in home-raised lines.

• Some individuals may show higher or more extended dorsal fins
• Others may remain more standard in appearance
• This variation is completely natural and part of the species’ diversity

👉 Fin height will vary from fish to fish — no two groups will look identical.

Behavior & Compatibility

Peppered Corydoras are extremely peaceful and thrive in groups.

• Ideal for community tanks
• Strong shoaling behavior — best kept in groups
• Active during the day and highly visible
• Compatible with most non-aggressive species

They are constantly foraging and interacting, bringing life to the bottom of the tank.

Tank Requirements

These fish are very hardy but perform best in a proper setup:

• Temperature: 70–78°F (slightly cooler tolerant than many Corys)
• pH Range: 6.0–7.5
• Tank Size: 20 gallons minimum
• Substrate: Sand or smooth substrate recommended
• Environment: Plants, driftwood, and open bottom space

A soft substrate helps protect their barbels during feeding.

Feeding

Peppered Corydoras are eager eaters and easy to maintain:

• Sinking pellets and wafers
• Frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp)
• Occasional live foods

They adapt quickly and stay active throughout the day.

Breeding Overview

Peppered Corydoras are one of the easier species to breed in captivity.

• Egg layers often triggered by cooler water changes
• Eggs placed on glass, plants, or surfaces
• No parental care — eggs can be raised separately
• Fry are hardy and grow steadily
